In assessing the crime situation in LaSalle, station 13 Commander Michèle Lacoursière said that for the period 2006 to 2009, the number of robberies decreased by 28.72%, the number of stolen vehicles by 15.87% and the number of break-ins by 30.97%. As for the street gang situation, this continues to be monitored by police; several people have been arrested in the last few months. Mayor Manon Barbe requested Commander Lacoursière for this assessment and the Mayor summarised the findings during the September 8 Council meeting. “I was delighted to note the major decrease in the incidence of most crimes in the last four years, which proves that the measures we took have a significant impact in our efforts to complement the work of the police in our Borough.” Mayor Barbe said, “Security and safety are a priority. This priority has been reflected in our departments’ numerous efforts and in Round Table discussions. We can make a difference by getting involved in our core competencies with boldness and imagination: changing our street lights to make them brighter, creating a mobile intervention team to allow social workers to be in touch with young people in difficult situations, establishing the Exit programme in our parks, providing the youth house in Hayward Park, engaging the services of Vélo Sécur patrols, removing graffiti, and setting up the anti-speed campaigns in parks and schools, and undertaking several other endeavours – all these have created a safer LaSalle for residents.” The Mayor reminded residents that in a survey conducted last winter, LaSalle residents put security as the second most important concern for quality of life. Respondents said they were 80% satisfied with police surveillance and with security in the Borough. Mayor Barbe concluded that “even if the assignment of police officers is not within our jurisdiction and that other problem areas receive more reinforcements, we in LaSalle continue to ask for more police officers and we won’t give up on our efforts in that regard.”
