On January 13, the City of Montreal presented its 2010 budget. For the island, the increase in fiscal charges will be 5.3% for the residential sector. If this increase translates into increased taxes in 18 boroughs, LaSalle is an exception because taxes here will go down for 91% of homeowners.
The gap between the increase in fiscal charges and the decrease in municipal evaluations is explained by the abolition of local taxes allocated for infrastructure and park equipment, as well as the decrease in local taxes for services. “The budget work that we have done has allowed us to absorb the supplementary fiscal effort requested by the City of Montreal”, Mayor Manon Barbe explained. “If LaSalle is the only Borough where property taxes for homeowners will decrease in 2010, it’s because of the budget restrictions totalling $4.7 million which we announced in 2009.”
The average decrease of 1.6% in taxes will vary depending on the type of dwelling. It will be 1.5% for single family homes, 1.2% for duplex and triplex homes and for condo co-ops, the average decrease will be 2.9%.
The fees for water will be $40.00 per dwelling unit, a decrease of $10.00. For household waste, the fees remain unchanged at $100.00. For the entire island, the increase in fiscal charges will be 6% Thanks to the decrease in local taxes, it will only be 4.7% in LaSalle.
