It’s not a big box store, it’s a ‘mom & pop shop’ that carries everything from tea pots to door stops. A place where you can lean against the service counter and talk about your problems. Well, most of your problems.
There are no tile samples nor are there large rolls of carpeting but when you’re in the need for a quick trip to the hardware store to pick up a couple of screws and a little advice or the kids have pushed the screen out of the window then Steve Hardware & Variety Store in Pointe Claire plaza is just the place to go.
Steve’s been in the business for over 20 years so you can feel very confident he’s seen the problem before and has enough experience to help point you in the right direction.
You can get an old lamp rewired, glass or mirror cut to fit and roller blinds cut to size (or resized.) Here’s an interesting service: they offer custom dog and kitty doors too.
I am a garbage picker, flea market finder, thrift shop shopper, so obviously many of my treasures have been in need of more than a paint job! Some have needed some creative solutions, as well as repair. I need someone willing to stay still for a minute and talk to me, not send me down another aisle. I hate that.
I like the variety I get from the smaller stores. For example, I recently discovered lemon oil for polishing & finishing wood furniture. I’m totally addicted! I’m now on my fifth bottle from Steve’s. So if you’re looking for a hard-to-find product, check out your local small hardware store. If they don’t carry it, just ask. These independent stores often have more flexibility in what they can order and stock.
Thanks Tim, for reminding me that a good hardware store is a great design resource.

Steve hardware and variety
Doing style the hardware way.
Not everyone thinks of a hardware store when talking about design resources. But when I asked the owner of Antiques du village, Tim Thomas, about his favorite resource, he named Steve hardware.
