Eliza Griffiths captures the contemporary human spirit in her current exhibition at the McClure Gallery.
Last chance to catch colourful 'Action Paintings'
Eliza Griffiths's current exhibition at the McClure Gallery is a colourful collection of what the artist has titled 'Action Paintings' — a vibrant display of paintings and whimsically sketched drawings that explore the connection between the human body and various actions, such as fighting, gambling, and meditating.
The London-born artist uses a cast of recurring characters in her art to explore the human experience. Having moved to Canada as a young child, she earned a BFA from Concordia University before going on to study art at Carleton University in Ottawa. She focused on art from a feminist perspective, and this interest in gender roles is represented in her current show.
The exhibition itself developed in unexpected ways, says Andrée Anne Vien, a coordinator at the Visual Arts Center. “She totally changed the idea of the show; she decided to make this gorgeous frieze on the wall, and she decided to show the sketch drawings. At first, I thought they were preparatory, but she decided to introduce them to the exhibition as is.”
The end result is a lively show that explores the human body in action, and in association with other bodies.
But you'll have to hurry to catch this show, which runs until this Saturday, Nov. 28. The McClure Gallery at the Visual Arts Centre, 350 Victoria Ave., is open Tuesday to Friday from noon to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit galeriemcclure@centredesartsvisuels.ca or call 514-488-9558.
