Lachine Borough pushes ahead with 40km/hour rule
Lachine Borough will be implementing the harmonisation project for speed limits at 40 km/hour in residential areas now that the Quebec Transportation Minister has given the green light.
The Minister approved regulation no. 2404-19 submitted by the Borough a few weeks ago which is aimed to modify the speed limit to 40 km/h in all residential streets.
Note that the speed limits on main roads and highways remain at 50 km/h, and at 30 km/h in parks, schools and on St. Joseph Boulevard.
For some time now, Lachine Borough had wanted to adhere to the 40 km/h rule. One reason was to have uniform speed limits which varied from 30 to 50 km/hour in different streets; the other reason was to adjust speed limits in accordance with LaSalle Borough and City of Dorval who have already adopted the measure.
“Our administration really desires to harmonise speed limits to, among others, reduce the number and seriousness of accidents in Lachine”, Lachine Mayor Me Claude Dauphin explained. “Improved security in our neighbourhoods is of paramount importance to maintain the quality of life for our residents”, he continued. Lachine Borough is one of the first five Boroughs in the City of Montreal to implement the 40 km/h rule in its area.
To implement this, signs indicating “MAXIMUM 40 km/h – SECTOR” will be set up at the entry points of residential areas. Drivers must respect this regulation when inside the boundaries in question or until they come across a sign indicating another speed limit.
When signs are installed, residents will receive additional information.
