Montréal Mayor Gérald Tremblay and Michael Applebaum, Montréal Executive Committee member responsible for sports and recreation and Mayor of the Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (CDN—NDG) borough, recently announced that the city administration has invested $800,000 in two projects in the CDN—NDG borough: replacing the artificial turf on the soccer field and renovating the wading pool, water play modules and swimmers’ pavilion in Kent Park. All in all, the work is valued at $2.56 M. “The amounts made available to the boroughs, such as in CDN—NDG, leverage even more investment. The $11.8 M invested will generate projects worth over $50 M in 28 sports facilities throughout Montréal in 2008-2009. My administration has created a first in Montréal, with this program to support sports facilities in the boroughs. We are sending a clear signal to Montrealers that our administration is committed to offering our young people, families and athletes top-notch sports and recreation facilities. This improves the quality of life in Montréal, which of course includes CDN—NDG,” said Mr. Tremblay. “Two years ago, we undertook extensive work to upgrade Kent Park, one of the most popular green spaces for sports and recreation in our borough. The project is now complete, with the new soccer field and the renovation work on the wading pool, adding up to $5 M in investment. With all these concrete actions, we are making sure that Montréal families and young people benefit directly, to promote healthy lifestyles,” emphasized Mr. Applebaum.

This program will allow the city of Montréal to identify action needed to keep sports facilities in good condition, in line with its sports priorities. At present there are over 600 buildings and 1,200 playing fields in the city of Montréal. (Press release courtesy CDN-NDG borough)

When Westmount Councillors revealed a plan to cover swaths of Westmount Park with artificial turf, residents acted with shock and outrage. A vigorous Save Westmount Park campaign ensued and eventually the plan for the fake turf was abandoned. Here in NDG, things are different: not only do we have this carcinogenic surfacing on a soccer field, but the borough admin is actually spending taxpayers money to replenish it.To read more about the dangers of artificial turf, check out http://www.uchc.edu/ocomm/newsarchive/news07/nov07/toxins.html.

As a resident of NDG-CDN, one of Montreal's largest boroughs, I would like to invite Mayor Tremblay, and my own current borough Mayor Michael Applebaum, to provide a complete breakdown of services "enjoyed" by each and every borough in Montreal. As a taxpayer, I would like to see how my elected officials spread my tax dollars over the city. How does the per capita blue collar allocation in NDG com pare with other boroughs? Has it risen from lowest ranking? How does NDG's ratio of parks, libraries, and other services compare with the other Montreal boroughs? After the closure of our largest library, the Fraser Hickson, and now the closure of one of our two outdoor pools, I fear that we may have sunk from our previous position as second from the bottom of the list in service ratios to the VERY BOTTOM. Oh yes, Mayor Tremblay, you are very concerned about taxpayers services - just not those in NDG. Why, I would like to know are we so far behind?? Where has Mayor Applebaum been in "taking us down"?? Why has he not brought us the services other boroughs have? We only ask what other have - no more. Why is the borough of NDG one of the highest contributors of tax dollars to the city centre but yet so low, lowest of the service rankings of all boroughs??? We will tell you on November 1 what we want. We want VISION. Wouldn't that be a change for NDG residents?! Arlyle Waring
